Cardiac examination is part of physical examination done to assess heart function mostly done when a patients has chest pains or breathing difficulties. EKG (electrocardiogram) takes approximately 5 minutes whereby the cardiologist places stickers on the patient’s chest attached with wires connected to a machine which measures the electro activity of the heart and prints the results. This helps to detect the rate and rhythm of the heartbeat, signs of heart attack and structural abnormalities. Echocardiogram (echo or cardiac ultrasound) takes approximately 45 minutes. The sonographer places gel on the patient’s chest then presses gently with a probe to take ultrasound images or videos of heartbeat and blood flow. This helps in detecting the function of right ventricle and left ventricle, leaking and narrowing of valves and structural abnormalities.
